The relational psychoanalytic approach views the human being as shaped through relationships. It doesn't focus solely on what someone 'carries' inside as an isolated system, it doesn't stay only on diagnoses and psychopathology treating the person as a lifeless symptom, but looks with a deeper gaze at how one relates. In therapy, what matters is not simply to talk about one's past or symptoms, but to see how old relational patterns appear in the present, sometimes even within the therapy room. We heal where we were wounded, within relationship. We are called to listen, to attune, and ultimately to learn something different from what traumatized us and continues to follow us.
The therapist doesn't hide behind a cold, neutral stance. Instead, they observe how they are affected by the patient, recognize the interaction between them, and use this living experience as a tool for understanding and change - when and if needed. An important part of the work is 'ruptures' - small or large moments where the connection is disrupted - and 'repair', the way they find connection again together. The goal is not a flawless, spotless relationship, but how we can coexist in human imperfection. Through these waves of connection and distancing, the patient learns new ways to relate beyond fear, defenses, or self-protective repetitions of the past.
Relational Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy allows the person to experience, within therapy, a different and safer relationship and learn to 'walk again' psychically on new paths. This experience - feeling seen, heard, and that someone stays with you even when there are difficulties - becomes a deep, corrective experience that changes how one relates outside of therapy.
